How to play

Tap any available letters to make a word of three or more letters. They do not need to touch, and each tile can be used once. Submitted letters disappear.

Aim for a six-letter word, a five-letter word and a four-letter word in any order. Tap a target box to choose your next length. Every accepted word fills the selected box. An off-target word still scores, but that attempt can no longer earn the Perfect 6-5-4 bonus.

Drag letters to rearrange the board or use Shuffle. Tap the last selected letter to step back, use Clear to deselect your word, or use Undo to restore the previous submitted word. Replay the tutorial from Help in the app.

Scoring

Each submitted letter earns 10 points. Clearing all fifteen tiles earns another 50 points. A six-, five- and four-letter clear earns an additional 50-point Perfect bonus.

A Perfect clear without hints scores 250 points. Other valid combinations can earn the board-clear bonus. Each new hint deducts 50 points.

Hints and sparks

You begin with two hints. A hint matches your selected target length and highlights the unordered letters of an intended word. A new hint spends one from your bank and deducts 50 points. Showing a revealed hint again is free, including after Reset.

Finishing a daily or challenge with at least three words earns sparks based on your score, with extra sparks for words of seven letters or more. Every twelve sparks earns another hint, up to five banked hints. Replays do not earn sparks.

Daily puzzles and challenges

A new daily board follows your device’s local date. Challenge mode offers more boards whenever you want another puzzle.

Previous Challenges shows the best and latest scores for each challenge, attempt counts and whether you achieved a Perfect 6-5-4. Replaying a challenge adds another result.

The word list

The game accepts British and American spellings, including days and months. Intended solutions and hints favour British English. Profane words are also accepted; the word list is not a child-safe vocabulary filter.

The word list is bundled with the app, so it may differ from a dictionary or your device’s spellchecker. To report a missing or unsuitable word, email apps@jonmiller.uk with the word, puzzle and app version.

Scores and Game Center

Game Center tracks distinct completed challenges and cumulative completed-challenge scores. Daily results are excluded. Replays that finish at least three words contribute to the cumulative score.

Leaderboards need an internet connection and an authenticated Apple Game Center account. Check Game Center in your device settings and reopen the app. You can play local puzzles without Game Center.

Devices and accessibility

6-5-4 is designed for iPhone and iPad running iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later. It supports Dynamic Type and VoiceOver and uses text alongside colour to explain state.

Progress and data

Progress and results stay on your device. The app does not provide developer-account cloud synchronisation. Device backups may include app data.

Deleting the app and its data removes local progress. Offloading may preserve it, and restoring a backup may bring it back. Game Center records are held separately by Apple. Read the privacy policy for details.
